The biggest overhaul of the UK's immigration system took place in 2008 with the implementation of the new points-based system. Under this system entry into the UK is permitted under one of 5 Tiers:-
Tier 1 - Highly Skilled Worker, Investor, Entrepreneur, Post-Study Work
Tier 2 - Skilled Worker, Intra-Company Transfer, Sports People, Minister of Religion
[Tier 3 – Temporarily suspended]
Tier 4 - Students – launched 31 March 2009
Tier 5 - Temporary Workers (Charity, Religious, Government Authorised Exchange), Youth Mobility Scheme
